When the power adapter is plugged in the only lights that come on are the modem jack lights which blink. Bought a new adapter to no avail. has anyone seen this before?

Contact HP, the power converter on the motherboard may have died. If that's the case you need them to either replace the converter or the motherboard.

unfortunately the laptop is a year out of warranty. I'd like to fix it myself if possible. do you mean the dc jack?

Be sure to check out the HP Website - This is a known issue and this model may be affected and covered under a 24month Extended Warranty!!
