Hello - I have a 40 gig harddrive which is running Windows 98SE.
I would like to keep all the data , as is , on this hard drive, but i believe i can split the hard drive into two so that I can put Windows XP on the "second " part of the hard drive.
Thus i will have what I have got at present - all programs etc on the 98SE OS, - and another OS ( XP ) on a separate part of the hard drive.
I believe Partition Magic will do it for me. I have the disc ( as part of scott mueller's book ) but I need a step by step guide s to how to use the partition magic.
Where can I find it on the internet, please?
TIA

The program comes with an excellent user guide, which should be listed on the Start Menu after the program is installed. Have you accessed this material?

The program also comes with a very helpful built-in Wizard.

I can send you the user guide, if you wish. It's about 1.3MB.

Toejam - thank you very much for the reply and the offer.
I haven't yet loaded the software-so i will do so and have a look -To see if i can follow it OK. I wanted to be sure there were no problems before I buy the XP.
I presume it is better to buy XP than 2000?? Or is there something I am unaware of. ?
cheers

There are pros and cons to each. I've run both, and I like both. Win2K is slightly more stable with the second service pack, but WinXP has better Plug-n-Play, and a larger driver database. WinXP has better game compatibility, but it's easier to find mature drivers for Win2K. They have different interfaces, although that's really up to the choice of the user. WinXP has extra features, like a decent System Restoration application which is a nice addition.

Both require the user to take more control over the operating system if you wish to achieve a decent level of performance, in comparison to Win9x.

I'm currently running WinXP all around, and I find it satisfactory.

Win2K users adjust quickly, I think ... but Win98 or WinME users tend to be lost for a while. Doing some reading up on the OS before the installation is something I highly recommend, to avoid user error while you become accustomed to the differences. I can send you a few links, if you'd like to do some research before committing yourself. I studied the OS for a few weeks before actually installing it, even though I was already running Win2K. Believe me, it paid off, and I've had a minimum of problems as a result. Others, who charged in full speed ahead, and tried to figure everything out as it presented itself, have not been so fortunate.
