What would you rename calculator.exe to and exactly why would you care about
being able to rename it?

Pin calc.exe (not exc) to the start menu if you want it to come up on boot.
But why? It doesn't take that long using start, all programs, accesories,
calculator...

Clear as mud. What exactly are you trying to do? Are the names shown
spelling mistakes or what you really have/want?

You can rename the file names- right click on the file and read the options
presented to you.

In order to use my own calculator, which has many more functions and a
"tape" in place of the XP calc. Instead of the default calc popping up when
I press calc on my keyboard. If it was possible to do this, which I've now
learned it is not, the default calc.exe would remaine in folder under the
name of _calc.exe and the NEW calc would take over under the name of
calc.exe. I was able to do this in Win 98, I believe.

You cannot change calc.exe, so why not change the link to your keyboard?
Every keyboard I now offer you a way to change the app you are pointing to.

Could you map your F-12 button to bring up your desired calculator? Or is
there a way to change what the calc hot key on your key board does?

That was a typo Alan, I apologize. The windows default calc is very basic as
you know. I have a calculator that does everything and has a tape. I wanted
to replace the default calc with MY own calc so that it will popup when I
press calc on my keyboard. That's all, I have since learned that the default
calc can not be renamed, sooooo, I can't do what I wanted to do.

If the button is programmable then why not just redefine to what
executable that keyboard button points? If it is hardcoded, it may
specify the %SystemRoot%\System32\calc.exe path to find the executable
or it might just execute calc.exe. If it doesn't include the path and
just executes the filename, you could put your calculator in whatever
path you want and then prepend that path onto the PATH environment
variable so that calc.exe gets found before the one in the System32
path.

Other than the method mentioned in my other post, go read
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=555047. Instead over overwriting the
old file with the new one, just rename the old file and then rename
yours to be the old filename. Might work.

What sort of a Microsoft keyboard?
I have a Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro with 19 extra keys and they
are certainly re programmable using the Intellitype Pro software.
I can change the assignment of the Calculator key.
