Compaq presario f700 cd drive and black screen problems

Help. I had my lap top for about 13-14 months before it started to have problems. Currently, it will not read any cds or dvds. Also, at times, the screen goes completely black. What is wrong? What should I do?

Return it to the retailer -- though it may be technically out of warranty, in most jurisdictions a consumer durable like a laptop should be, well, durable.

Certainly more than 14 months.

If they point to the warranty, point them to the part of the warranty which says this does not affect your normal consumer rights.
