I'm finally making the move this year to upgrade my electronics and now need to pick a receiver/amp/tuner. The recommendations I've gotten so far are listed above, but would much appreciate your thoughts.....
Use: The system is primarily used to watch TV and DVDs, with some music much less often.
Setting: The electronics are in a neche' under the stairs, next to a corner fireplace. This means no rear speakers without trailing wires across the room (a no-no from the spouse), going wireless (which I'm reluctant to do as quality isn't that hot), or doing construction (not financially feasible at the moment).
Price: I'm trying to stay in the $400 neighborhood and can only seem to do that with the above speakers by purchasing online.
Us: Neither of us are audiophiles, so we're not going to be particularly swayed by numbers on any specific receiver. We do, however, anticipate that we'll move one day and I'd like to be as "upward compatible" as possible for the future even though now my Polk RM6750 speakers are limited to the sub-woofer, L/R/C channels. One big thing my wife insistes on is usability and, for her, that means on-screen display and the abilityt o hit a single button to switch from watching a DVD to TV to radio to....
Other:
I mentioned above that we'll evenutally move so even though my speaker config is limited now, I'd still like to pick up the widest range of sound options (Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic, etc.) possible in that we might one day be able to use them.
I'd really like to store and manage our music on a HDD so it'd be great to have either a USB where I could plug in a external HDD (most preferable) or else have a wireless link to a PC. Note that neither of the receivers listed in the title have this.
Oh, we live in a warm climate so the AC is on much more often than note. Even so, it'd be great if the receiver was relatively cool. (The Yamaha RX-V757 seemed esp. good at this.)
Neither of us is brand loyal. I was surprised someone recommended Yamaha to me as back in ye olde college days it wasn't considered a very good brand whereas Denon and HK were considered much more favorably.
We don't need any zone outputs.
We like the idea of having the system include a microphone so that it (rather than us) can calibrate the speakers. The possible hitch in this is that we'd only have several speakers hooked up, not the full set.
That being said -- and thank you for reading this far! -- what are your thoughts on where we should go? Do you think one of the above is preferable over the other, or do you have (or know of) another selection we should consider?
