Does anyone have a good source of information/reviews for this monitor. I've searched all over google and found tid-bit articles but nothing as comprehensive as the monitor reviews found here at toms.
I'm a complete multimedia/gamer whore so as u'd guess finding the top notch TFT is a must! But hell I'd be damed for buying a new TFT before doing one's homework.
If anyone has been brave enough to purchase one already whats it like?
Thks!

I bought one from newegg after reading the reviews I referenced and talking to hyundai ImageQuest technicians. Still bought it sight unseen which is a gamble but thye specs looked good and Hyundai gave me a good vibe. Not technical I know but its the truth. Also knowing that the panel was from Samsung - a leader in advances in a-siTFT and future OLED tech I figured it was money well spent.
Oh yeah, the money. Seemed to me to be the most feature filled 19" for the money and I have been looking for some time. The 8ms RT was good news even though it was r/f and not grey to grey.
OK my impressions:
Asthetics:
+ good looking - nice design
+ well made - fit and finish is very good
+ Bezel is very thin - as thin as what viewsonic calls Ultra thin
Ergonomics:
+ adjustable height is great - about 6" of vert motion
- No Swivel - would be nice
+ Pivot works well - smooth motion
+/- wiring may need to be asjusted when pivoting
+/- controls are small and labels are smaller - this could have been better
+ Menues are simple and easy to navigate
Normal Operation:
+ Very Bright - default settings work fine for me
+ Excellent contrast - blacks are best I've experienced in a 19"
+ Pivot mode is great for working with documents or web surfing : My video adapter is NVIDIA GeforceFX 6800 Ultra - NVidea Rotation funtion works great
- There is a slight off center brightness gradient (mentioned in newegg reviews)that you have to look hard to find. It didn't hinder my use and enjoyment
Gaming:
+ Gaming/adapter artifacts - AA - dithering- Kern - Pixel Shadowing all render excelletly on this panel
+ Played Doom3, HL2, UT2000, QuakeIII Arena,Everquest, W0W all with no ghosting I could see
I'm still playng with it but so far I'm glad I made the purchase.
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there....
Thats great, thanks for the links and first hand experience! I'm glad the gaming is working a treat, thats def one of my main areas. I have read the sites you suggested and have come across some term realting to watching movies "Twinkling effect", resulting in having to sit a distance back from the screen. Could you expalin to what level of degree this happens on the L90D+? It is a little concerning considering I do watch alot of dvds via my PC and is something I've never had to suffer with on a CRT.
Thanks!
z3ph.
I noticed also the L90 has a noticably LOWER view angle. does it affect anything much?
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Hitman84 on 01/30/05 09:14 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
First the twinkling. I never watched any movies up until now so I just popped in ROTK and went to the battle of the pellenor fight scene. I honestly didn't see any groups of pixels in random motion like the behardware article mentioned. I moved in close and then moved away as the article mentioned and stil saw nothing.
However, I bet they submitted it to a more specific test regimen (I think). The picture was very good and the motion and action was rendered with no ill effects in letterbox which is the way I like to watch my movies.
As to the view angle and pitch it hasn't presented me with any concern at any time.
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there.... <P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by palmerg on 01/30/05 08:56 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
8ms response time makes it really appealing. 19" basically tells me to buy or die
Cool, sounds like DVDs don't get effected, possible it is encoded files such as DIVx where its more noticeable? Other than that I wouldn't know what tests to suggest getting the "sparkling" effect.
One other thing (sorry to keep going on and on) but I've been talking to someone and they mentioned the possibility of sitting too close to a large TFT that could effect viewing i.e. nice and sharp/bright in the centre, losing contrast as you move towards the edges. Is there a minimum viewing distance with a 19" TFT as not to effect the overall viewable screen in terms of full viewing screen sharpness/brightness?
Thanks,
z3ph.
I haven't experimented with that to any degree. I do my viewing at around 18" from the panel. SO all my comments are based on that give or take a couple of inches I guess.
FYI:
Just wanted to relay info that I sent to others in a private post:
Did some testing in portrait mode this morning and:
> single person use is fine with a slight but noticable graduation in brightness from left to right.
> There is a degradation in viewing as you move your view from side to side. It is most sever and occurs at lower viewing angles moving to the left of center (which would be the bottom of the screen in normal or landscape view)
> therefore sharing the view in the portrait mode with other is impacted and may not be so good.
> I have been using this mode all morning to work on word docs, pdfs, emails and web surfing, all have work great with just me viewing the screen.
One other piece of info that I just played with:
Gaming in this mode isn't recommended.
Tried Doom3 Demo - that game is very dark in the first place but in this mode it is almost a void, if you know what I mean. That plus the game will not auto adjust to the new format for it resides in the upper half of the screen. Coupled with the brightness gradient I mentioned above it isn't recommended. (I don't know who would want to play in this mode anyway)
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there....
interesting piece of information here
For the heck of it I emailed imagequest support and asked what the response time of the L90d+ was and I got a response of
"19 miliseconds

Also its important to have whomever specify what RT they are quoting.
Read the behardware review again and you wil see what I mean. rise and fall RT is quite different and less telling (for gamers) than Grey to Grey RTs.
I'm not pushing the Hyundai I'm sure you will have a great gaming experience whatever you decide.

"Maybe you should contact Viewsonic as well?"
well what stopped me from doing that is the fact that newegg and the viewsonic site both have the response time in their specs sheet and the imagequest didnt, it's simply stated in the item name.
Jyust sent this to Hyundai. Hopefully they wil consider it important enough to provide some detail:
Hi,
I am a member of Tom's hardware forum which has recently been discussing the Pro's and Con's of the L90D+.
Recent posts have uncovered a problem with Hyundau reporting different figures for pixel response
- Susan reported 8ms to me
- Andy Chia reported 19ms to another person on the forum
Which is it? Please give any detail that will help iron this dilemma out.
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there....
SOunds like your mind is made up. I would go with it. You proabably won't be disappointed and you can get on with gaming that much sooner. Besides it seems like Hyundai needs to get their act together. If I find that its been using faulty advertising I stil have the Hyundai box and I may just send it back and buy that Viewsonic right behind you.
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there....
honestly it isn't.
That 19" is really appealing so I guess I'll wait to see what they say to you. My new pc wont be ready for about a week anyway so I can always end up changing my mind again knowing me.
Here is what I just got from Susan Yuen at Hyundai Image Quest. I have sent a message to the email she suggested and haven't recieved a reply yet. It specifically askes for the details about pixel response we will need to make a real assessment.
Dear Gary,
Our L90D+ model has 8ms response time.
For any future product questions, please contact me directly
or our QA dept in Korea (minkb@hyundaiq.com).
(Andy @ AVC Tech, please be informed that L90D+ model has 8ms response time.
This is different from L90D model which we have been carrying.
L90D+ just came out in US recently so please be informed of this
information.)

I also notice that newegg has just raised the shipping to $12 for the imagequest. must have been a week promotion or something.
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Hitman84 on 01/31/05 01:45 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
yeah? That kind of stinks and is a factor to consider. I got in just under the wire it seems.
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there....
I DOUBT it will affect my decision but...
I mean for a 19" its only 2 more then shipping the 17" viewsonic. For me deciding on equip by shipping price is....foolish? I have odd oppinions on things but *shrug* as of right now Im probably going to get the imagequest. I doubt Ill use it in portrait mode so Im not worried about those issues
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Hitman84 on 01/31/05 02:08 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
One difference after the addition of a shipping charge is that when I bought it stated that "this can only be returned for another L90D+" or somthing like that. It no longer says that.
Also I just got this reply from Andy Chia: Kind of weird and still raises questions because I remember reading that the L90D had 25ms response times. Still seems like some confusion here.

lol. Maybe they just trying to keep us happy
This just keeps getting wierder!
Got a reply from Dylan Kim. He sent me a portion of a PDF supposedly for the Samsung panel (LTM190E1-L03) used in the L90D+. However, that partial doc lists some crazy and differnt specs. Here is the email I sent to the guy Dylan Kim recomented I talk to.
Hello Mr. Kang,
As you can see below your name was given to me by Dylan Kim a technical representative from Hyundai.
I am a member of a very popular disscusion forum called Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) and recently we have been discussing pros and cons of the new Hyundai L90D+ which recently arrived in the USA for sale. The major issue is the 8ms response time reported for the panel.
Different members have recieved different quotes depending on who they contacted. Some representatives said 16ms others 8ms and still others mentioned 25ms. It is confusing.
The Hyundai spokeswomen, Susan Yuen, states 8ms. She told Dylan Kim to help me with details. I wanted to know if the 8ms was rise and fall or if it was a measure of Grey to Grey response. Mr Kim sent me part of a document for a Samsung panel, the LTM190E1-L03. What he sent me said nothing about response times. I was able to find the entire document at <A HREF="http://apollodisplays.com/largeareatftkits.htm" target="_new">http://apollodisplays.com/largeareatftkits.htm</A>.
This document shows a 25ms response time for this panel. The document also shows other odd values that don't seem to match what is advertised for the L90D+. Contrast ratio, brightness, and number of colors are all different and most not as good as what the L90D+ is supposed to have.
I am assuming that Dylan sent me the wrong document and the that L90D+ doesn't use that Samsung panel, LTM190E1-L03. It must use another Samsung panel to get the improved specifications.
Specifically, I am looking for detail on the Samsung panel used in teh Hyundai L90D+, the true response time, and also how the response time is measured. Is it rise and fall or is it grey to grey or somthing else?
I would appreciate any help you can provide.
He hasn't responded yet. When he does I'll post it.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by palmerg on 02/01/05 11:46 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
Found a panel at the Samsung site <A HREF="http://www.samsung.com/Products/TFTLCD/Monitors_n_Industrial/LTM190EX/LTM190EX.htm" target="_new">http://www.samsung.com/Products/TFTLCD/Monitors_n_Industrial/LTM190EX/LTM190EX.htm</A>
that seems more in line with what is in the L90D+, however some of the specs are still off a bit.
I'm gonna quit looking and let Samsung /Hyundai do some work.
See ya later.
I still really like my ImageQuest A LOT! Somebody in either of thse companies must know whats going on.
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by palmerg on 02/01/05 11:35 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
well...
because newegg is usually spot on with their stuff and your great review. I ordered one. My biggest concern was ghosting and you've experienced none and I tend to believe that it is 8ms response time. Alot of times parts will be altered for companies so that could also be the case here. wish me luck :-D
Good Luck! If your experience is near as good as mine I am happy for you. Well worth the price for sure.
Please let me and all hear what you think after you tinker a bit.
first thing I'm gonna do is install Farcry on the new PC which should ship tomorrow and check it out with the monitor.
little something I found for those that are interested.
http://www.behardware.com/articles/534/page4.html
this panel is excellent, i play Counterstrike for hours and no motion problems at all.
Im very glad I bought this.
and yes it is based on samsung technology, and apparently a few panels will be coming out soon similar in spec, but Hyundai the first to get 8ms one out i believe and its cool.
now saving up some cash to get myself a X850XT PE card to really see what this monitor can do.
I def recommend looking for a top end gfx card to partner this with as optimal resolution is 1280x1024, and you want top play all games at that res as they look so crisp.
I have to say LCD is so easy on the eyes compare to crt, eye strain seems to be a thing of the past.
Have my alienware in fedex's hands. lookin at a delivery date of sat at the latest. Monitor should arrive tomorrow. IN case you were wondering the PC will have a 6800 ultra XD
That's the card I use. I love it although I did ratchet the AAs up to 8x and the results (especially for text) were less that 100%. I found that 4xAA is optimal but that's me.
well, after useing the monitor with my new PC and playing tribes for over an hour and hopping on WoW I've come to the conclusion it's one hell of a monitor. no dead pixels and any worries I've had have been nullified.
That's Great to hear. I've been playing EQ some lately and it has made that "older" graphics engine come alive again. Although I'm sure that the 6800 U has a lot to do with the experience too
.
Have fun.
What WoW server do you play on. I'm thinking about subscribing when my EQ expires. Its an awesome game, especially since I tend to play more solo and WoW seems to have more designed for that type of player.
I'm on Silvermoon.
Whats great about WoW is you can solo and get something done and feal some sort of accomplishment. but you can also group and do alot. Really awesome game.
How's the image in games when running in a non-native resolution? I'm in the market for an LCD, but the one thing that bothers me is the interpolation at non-native resolutions. Usually their native resolution is 1280x1024, which is a non-standard aspect ratio (5:4). There are quite a few games that don't support this resolution, and instead opt for 1280x960 (standard, 4:3 ratio). Have you tried anything in 1280x960?
I only now tried this since you asked. In EQ changing the in-game resolution simply results in the resize of the in-game window to fit what you chose. The graphic quality remains the same on a very cluttered canvas.
I changed the resolution on the graphics adapter in XP and the quality of the image degraded substantially from the native 1.25:1 AR.
In Doom3 at lowered resolutions the amount of scene real estate you saw in front of you changed (got less with lowered resolution) but the image quality remained very good.
Oh and neither the two games or my video adapter offered 1280x960 (1.33:1) as an option for me to try but if it did I am pretty sure that I would have gotten black bars on top and bottom of the monitor. SO if you play games that give you this option you may see the bars as a consequence on the L90D+.
Just my opinion, but 4:3 or 1.33:1 being 1960's NTSC TV ratio I don't think it will be standard for very long. 5:4 or 1.25:1 is an artifact of some LCDs especially in 17 and 19 inch varieties. The 20+ variety of LDC all have 1600x1200 at min which gets you the 1.33:1 again as the native mode as you probably already know.
Thanks. That's good news. 1280x1024 is actually my preferred resolution for everything, but I do have a game or two that doesn't offer it.
So are you guys still happy with this monitor? I'm thinking of getting one, mainly to play everquest and EQ2 with some other less demanding games thrown in occasionally. This will be my frist foray into the lcd world and I'm anxious about it. Ghosting of course is my main concern. Too bad stores rarely have much in the way of selection to actually look at. Anyway, would you buy it again if you had it to do over?
Thanks much!
Kel
Yep, for sure. I play EQ (Halfling Ranger on Povar) a lot and WoW sometimes (although the free month is about over - hehe). The larger real estate, great color rendering (albiet some would argue that its not the best on the market - georgeous to me), and speed have breathed new life into EQ for me. Now they just need some solo content for mid to high levels - LOL. Oh yeah DVI, speakers adn pivot too.
But yeah, I would certainly buy this again. Especially if the price remains the same. No regrets!!
so how does the Samsung 915n compare to the L90D+ monitor?
No personal details but the first link in my first post on this thread has a review of the 913N/915N. Maybe some detail there.
Just looked on newegg. The L90D+ is backordered and the price has gone up to $410.00. That's a $30.00 price hike.
Supply and demand at work I guess.
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by palmerg on 02/14/05 07:45 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
Well I took the plunge today. Found the L90d+ back in stock at chiefvalue for $379, free shipping
It should be here Friday so I'll post about it after I break it in over the weekend. Thanks for the reply!
Kel
well tomshardware just review this panel and 2 others and this just got the editors award!!!!
Glad to see it was money well spent
It got here a day early! I only had time to play around with it for an hour or two but I'm going to add my voice to the growing chorus of praise for this monitor. It looks great! And not one dead pixel
The only thing I've found so far that is a bit of a bummer is the placement of the adjustment buttons. But really not that big of a deal since once it's adjusted I won't be using them anymore.
