Hey all,

I'd like to know what it means when system specs say "Expandable Video Memory - Yes up to 358MB" and "Video Memory - Expandable Up To 358MB"...

The Graphics Chipset is the Mobile Intel GMA X1300, in a Toshiba Satellite A200-FS2 notebook. When I bring up the graphics properties window this report appears:

Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile Report

Report Date: 02/29/2008
Report Time[hr:mm:ss]: 00:12:49
Driver Version: 6.14.10.4833
Operating System: Windows XP* Professional, Service Pack 2 (5.1.2600)
Default Language: English
DirectX* Version: 9.0
Physical Memory: 2038 MB
Minimum Graphics Memory: 8 MB
Maximum Graphics Memory: 128 MB
Graphics Memory in Use: 10 MB
Processor: x86 family 6 Model 15 Stepping 13
Processor Speed: 1596 MHZ
Vendor ID:
Device ID:
Device Revision:

The thing i want to know is if the graphics memory is expandable to 358MB, why does it say Maximum Graphics Memory: 128MB?? Is there a way to expand it through the bios or something?? How is it done?

Thanks in advance!

I think it might mean that the card can take some of your system ram as it's own. Basically, it'll reserve part of the system RAM as "video memory" that's only used for the graphical calculations. I /think/ that's what it means at least, and yeah, the amount of system RAM allocated to the video card is software controlled.

Ok you have a DEDICATED 128MB of Video ram on your video card there but it can SHARE or EXPAND to 358MB of ram. That is a combined total of that 128MB ram on the card and your system ram.

For example I have a 512MB Dedicated Geforce Go 8800 GTS Video card in my laptop. it has 512MB of ram on the video card. But it is Expandable up to 1.7GB of Shared System Ram.
