SATA drive failure, looking to recover data

my friend's SATA drive died..
or rather the controller board on it did, the disks are ok
whats the best way to go about trying to get crucial data off it?

The best way is to restore the data from your backup but I guess you don't have one, doh!

Carefully swap the controller board with the controller board from an identical disk, plug it in and you should be able to retrieve the data.
