Windows 7, Black screen of death

I was working on my computer when it spontaneously shut down. When it rebooted, I got the BSOD with a blinking cursor. I can access Setup, but the computer won't boot up.

Gateway laptop running Windows 7
Intel Pentium processor

I don't have the other specs because I can't boot up.

Can anyone please help? Thank you!!!

  1. set the bios to boot DVD / CD first
    Insert the win 7 disk
Turn on the computer and select: "upgrade"
This restores the default operating system--BUT does not erase your files or programs.
  2. Hi. Thanks for responding so quickly. The laptop didn't come with a backup CD. I already set the "boot to CD" option and I tried booting up from a Windows Vista CD, but it only gave me the option of reinstalling Windows, which I didn't want to do as it would erase the hard drive.
  3. Can anyone help me, please? I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
