Will a Asus GTX 550 Ti work ok in a dual quad xeon XW8600 HP

Probably, but as I recall the 550Ti has some rather hefty power requirements on the 12V rail. Something like needing 21A on that rail. So, you'll want to make sure that your PSU can handle that. My guess would be that a SMP workstation, it can, but better to check before buying.
