Incest - Best kept in the family

Come on, you cannot blame the kids for this. The article doesnt state the age of the children but they cant be that old (the woman in question is 35!). Also, there was alcohol into play which should not have been provided to the kids in the first place (if they're too young for that).

I hope she gets treated quickly (and not just for the alcohol abuse) and at least she's on the right track, as she's realizing that she was way off base on this. However the fact that she fooked up twice with some time in between does not look good at all. Still, my guess is she'll get off on a conditional sentence this time (if she accepts treatment).

I'm not <i>blaming</i> anyone. Was just an observation on the whole parent/child incest thing. It's so far outside my understanding that I simply can't relate to it.

Alcohol is no doubt a factor, but I've never been drunk enough to find my own mother attractive or even to see her in terms of someone with a sex life at all, at any age. I don't expect to find my own kids attractive, if/when I have some.

If anyone is to blame then of course it's the mother, but as you say she needs some form of treatment..

Actually, having kids myself, I disagree. I do find them attractive. Not in a sexual sense at the moment but I can imagine I'll find them even sexually attractive in some future time. However, because I love my children more than anything else in the world I cannot imagine harming them in any way and introducing sex in a parent-child relationship is one of the most harmful things you can do to a child. Sex has no place there, ever, even though the relationship between parent and child changes during growing up. If people cannot relate to that, they need some form of treatment in my opinion.

An adult having a sexual relationship with any minor will be harmful to that minor, there is a reason why there are laws prohibiting such behavior, and why we have labels for people who cannot make such distinctions clearly and need treatment for that.

Problem with laws is that they have absolutes in them, like everybody less than 18 years of age is a minor. I know minors that are way over 20 years of age and I've known adults of 16 (for me that was the lowest age for an adult I personally have witnessed). It is hard to quantify exactly what makes a person an adult but if you spend some time with a person, you just know/feel it (at least I do, being an adult myself).

Well, like I said I haven't got any kids of my own (yet... plenty of time), so I can't really comment on what a parent feels for their kids..

Yup... all people are different, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Exactly where the line should be drawn is a bit of a grey area, as evidenced by the varying ages for everything between different countries...

I've always found it strange that here in the UK you're legally allowed to have sex (and therefore must be thought of as <i>potentially</i> a responsible parent) at 16, can get married at 17, yet can't be trusted to drink alcohol until 18.

One is reminded of the Oedipus principle here. It's not surprising it can still happen. Mom, sister, cousin, if you were never told they're relatives, you could succumb to attraction, even sexual, when you think about it.
