I have only installed my new GPU about 3 months ago. The GPU is a radeon 6870. Up to date drivers in everything (including flash player). PSU is 550W XFX (500W is required for the GPU) the GPU is not overclocked.

Could anyone give me any advice please thanks. I have also done a memtest and everything is fine

In short, upgrade your power supply. It's quite probable one of the rails on your power supply is dropping outwith the ATX spec and your system is becoming unstable. I've already had to do it with 2 systems :(  and they're stable now :)
