On the Windows Update Screen, choose 'Change Settings' and 'Never check for Updates' Then click 'Check for Updates'. Once finished, go back to 'Change Settings' and choose 'Install Updates Automatically'
Should work thereafter... (Don't ask me why this works!)

If the previous answer doesn't work then it might be your win 7 is not activated properly or you are using a pirated version.

Also, if your system time/date is incorrect it will also cause problems updating.
