can they be on the charger 24/7 ? its wondering if the battery is safe to be on the charger all the time. my dad told me to keep it on the charger as long as possible or the battery will weaken if the battery dies and recharges all the time. its a tosiba a 305-s 6837. so is that true about laptop batterys ?

i want to add my dad gets a new laptop every year and he told me the batterys are alot of money and its always good to keep it charged. is that true ? some times he likes to say things and the stuff he told me to do and it ends up breaking down or damage to it.

Almost all laptops these days have LiIon or LiPoly batteries, which must be charged with intelligent chargers. No worries about overcharging them, in contrast with NiCads.

He is right about leaving it on the charger, as the lifetime of a LiIon battery is shortened by two things: Heat; (Dis)Charge cycles. Batteries are rated in charge/discharge cycles, so if left on the charger you do not incur these to a large degree.

If you don't use the laptop on the move much, you should have the battery about half charged and then remove it from the machine. Use it say once a month, so that it discharges and then recharges to about 50% and then store it in a cool place.

You only need to have the battery fully charged if you use the laptop in battery mode.
