Wireless carriers can be very confusing about their data options and
some do charge premiums for data calls. Verizon has a number of data
options but does support the use of airtime for data calls without an
additional contract. I use my bundled voice minutes for email data
calls to my standard Earthlink account using my Palm and standard cell
phone. If you have a newer phone you can get speeds faster that
wireline dialup. You can't get wireless email much cheaper than that.
