Hi everyone, hope this post belongs here :)

I'm about to buy an AV reciever which decodes DD and DTS bitstreams for use with my girlfriends new computer. The receiver has both Optical and Co-axial digital inputs.

Her PC has an onboard AC'97 chip. Can anyone tell me if the standard lineout plug will act as a S/PDIF port? or do I need to buy the additional breakout board for that? I know that the line-out is a 3.5mm plug, but it would be quite easy to make a 3.5mm -> Co-ax cable.

Thanks for your help!

That Line-out jack on her PC is analog. Unless you can change its output to Digital in the drivers (e.g. Creative cards have this option that turns the Center/Subwoofer output to a SPDIF port) you can't connect that port to a Digital-in and get sound.
