My grandmother has an old Dell laptop and the HDD recently just died on her. Here is the site with all of the info on the laptop. The service tag is ******.

I was reading in another thread that 3.0 GB/s SATA drives will work fine with 1.5 GB/s SATA controllers. So I was wondering what HDD you guys would recommend. This is the HDD that was in the laptop, and this is the one I'm thinking about buying.

She only uses the computer to check email (have her set up with Thunderbird) and surf the web. Pretty simple requirements, and this machine handles everything she does great (up until the HDD died that is).

Would like to spend about $50 shipped.

Thanks for any help!!!

Hey Mike,

I deleted the service tag number from the post so someone doesn't attempt to use it in an inappropriate manner.

Anyways, yes, a SATA II drive will work just fine with a SATA I controller, but the newer drive will down clock to SATA I speed. Something like this should do the job:
