So I have a Yamaha somthing or other. 400$ reciever with doby dital, prologicenhanced2-music2-movie, DTS, and tons of toher things. Does my dvd player need a decoder too? my current one does, but I need a new one. and do I need a new reciever to get Dolby HD surround sound or whatever?
As far as I know, most DVD players don't have Dolby digital decoders in them. Most if not all DVD players are capable of sending out an encoded Dolby signal, but your surround sound amp does all the decoding. DVD players usually don't send a proper Dolby digital signal by default.
To get your DVD player to send out the proper surround sound signal you'll have to go into its basic operating menus and change the output signal from PCM to Dolby digital
