So I have a Yamaha somthing or other. 400$ reciever with doby dital, prologicenhanced2-music2-movie, DTS, and tons of toher things. Does my dvd player need a decoder too? my current one does, but I need a new one. and do I need a new reciever to get Dolby HD surround sound or whatever?
All you need is a digital connections for the DVD player to pass through the DTS or DD signal. Optical or digital coaxial.
I'm not sure about Dolby HD...but assuming your Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player decodes it I would think passing through just like regular DTS and DD would work.
I currently have to pass DTS through to my receiver since my Phillips DVP-642 doesn't have a decoder. Which is fine since the 642 plays nearly every Divx/Xvid file you can download.
