I am trying to do a repair install of Windows 7 Pro x64 because of this (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum2.php?config=tomshardwareus.inc&cat=63&post=50441&page=1&p=1&sondage=0&owntopic=1&trash) problem. I have SP1 installed and I have a Windows 7 x64 SP1 DVD.
I run the setup and choose upgrade. I have eliminated all compatibility issues. The setup runs completely without issue but when it gets to the end I get a message saying "upgrade was not successful. Your computer is being returned to its previous.............."
Does anyone no what might be the problem.

Solution
I would ust save all of your data and then wipe the HD clean. Then reinstall everything. Why? Because the repaire usually doesn't work in the long term. Too many items get corrupted and therefore you have less headaches down the road.

good luck,

Jim
