I am interested in taking one of these, but I have some questions:
1) Which would be a better qualification to have? MCSE or MCSA?
2) I see there are different versions, one for Windows 2000 and one for Windows 2003. Which would be the better option? Does the Windows 2003 exam have pretty much the same as the 2000 exam only more, or are both the OS's very different from each other?
3) If I had a qualification for the 2003 version, but somewhere was running Windows 2000 instead (or vice versa), could I still be hired?
4) Which books would be best to buy? If you can think of any, see if they are available here:
Which one you go for(2000 or 2003) slightly depends on the market you'll be targeting. In general, I would go for the 2003 version.
If you get an interview and they express concern that you are certified for 2003 and not 2000, just calmly explain you can handle 2000, that much of what is covered in the exams is applicable to 2000, and that you went for 2003 to extend the life of the value of your certification.
Honestly, I don't have an MS cert, but I have friends who do, and from what they've told me, the magic letters tend to be more important to employers(when they're important at all) than which version of Windows it's for. This is in general. My friend recently upgraded his NT cert for 2003 though, as he ran into an employer who wanted at least a 2000 cert.
Can't tell you which books to buy, but from what I understand about the exams, you have a core exam, as well as elective exams. I think there's something like 5 total exams you have to take. Check MS's site for more info.
