I bought 512meg of pc2100ddr to add to a system that already has 1 256meg pc2100 and 1 128meg pc2100 installed..the mobo is a gigabyte GA-8SG800 which is suppose to support 3gig of pc2100 but when i install the new memory it detects it on boot up but then windows will either freeze for a sec..flash a black screen or even random reboot or even not boot up at all..i have already took the 512 mem back to shop and got replacement but same thing happens..could it be power related

Download and run Memtest86 (free proggie). "Google" for it. It'll check the ram for you and tell if it's bad/faulty.

Does it lock up with only the new 512MB chip in it?

yeah...i've tried all combinations in all slots..even when i manage to get into windows with all mem in..it will look fine but if i run a virus scan or something it will just reboot..just as an update i have changed the psu from a 400w to a 550w and it still does the same things..
