I was thinking of buying a new mobo with 2 SATA channels and 2 IDE channels. Now what I was wondering was, can I use a SATA drive as my main "windows HD" just like that? Is it as easy as using an IDE HD? I was thinking of getting a 36 gig Raptor, dunno if it's very noisy. Anyway, I appreciate any help/hints!

I would be running the system with a R9800 XT and XP2400+.

Yes, it's that easy. Just ensure you change your BIOS to boot from SATA/SCSI depending on the mobo.
