We used to connect OK to our ISP with our internal modem but it stopped working one day. After sending and recieving a few hundred bytes nothing happens, no browser, e-mail, FTP, or getright (or anything) works We could send and recieve a few more bytes but still no web pages appear. Ping test is fine to our ISP. Another (external) modem fitted had same problem. Both modems work fine in another PC to same ISP. Second installation (by renaming win.com) of win98SE solved problem, but we want to use original installation (original still on harddisk). Have tried reinstalling modem drivers and windows communication components and even whole of windows over the top of the original session, but without success.

Had a similar problem whereby PPP worked so you could dial your ISP, but TCP/IP didn't.

There were two entries for TCP/IP in Control Panel>Network, deleting one fixed the problem (it was something to do with enabling sharing, long time ago, memory is hazy).

Your problem sounds similar, I would check all the network settings and bindings in Control Panel>Network then compare to your non-working installation.

Sorry the advice is a tad vague...

Thanks for the tips, but I seem to have sorted the problem differently. We had a hunch that it might be something to do with ZoneAlarm, our software firewall, so we uninstalled it. Didn't solve problem. At our wits end, we reinstalled it and ran it. We then tried to connect to the internet, and it worked! I suppose there must be some security feature of ZoneAlarm that stops the internet working if it isn't running, and this feature still works even if it is unistalled. Wierd stuff.

Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.
