OK as some of you know, i have had on going problems with my new system and today i found out why (as you might have gues it is something todo with my memory) Anyway when i first bought my new system it came as a upgrade package (from www.komplett.co.uk)In the package was a ASUS A7V8X-X mobo a 3000xp+ and two sticks of twinmos pc3200 value ram. Today when i was looking through my bios i found that my motherboard doesnt support the pc3200 speed memory with a 333FBS chip and it only has support with speeds between 200-266FSB!! how can this be?? any way i have emailed the company and asked them to replace the ram for pc2700.

My system:
AMD Athlon Barton 3000xp+
ATI Radeon Hercules 9800pro 128mb
WD 120gb 7,200rpm 8mb cache.
512mb twinmos pc3200
ASUS a7v8x-x Mobo.

That's odd... There shouldn't be a problem.

45.5k mark? 85 dollars went a long way. So did that extra 15 dollars for cooling my video card.

I know!! i couldnt belive it! The mobo manual says it supports DDR400, but it only supports it with a 200-266 FSB!!! So ATM im having to run at 1.6GHZ with 266FSB untill i get a replacement

Well, i can't see why there would be a problem using the memory though. The memory should run slower, that's all.
I mean, i'm probably wrong or something so anyone correct me or try and teach me what's happening here. :)

Another thing wouldn't you rather have a different motherboard, since that motherboard will only support up to 266fsb.. i'm assuming that's double pumped marketing terms.
Because 200 fsb is 3200 speeds before marketing get's to it.
I don't know i must still be drunk, something isn't adding up here.
I'm seeing it supports pc3200 memory and then it should support 200(400) fsb. Therefor if anything it would seem that either the memory is just faulty or the motherboard is being an Asus.

No this board doesnt support 200MHZ(400FSB) it only supports up to 166MHZ(333FSB).

In the manual (page 1-4) it has a table showing the different memory speed groups (DDR266) (DDR333) and (DDR400)
and if its supported at 200-266MHZ(100-133FSB) and 333MHZ(166FSB)and it clearly shows that the DDR400 speed ram can only be used at 200-266(100-133FSB) and that it has no support for it at 333MHZ(166FSB).

That's extremely weird to me. I see what your saying. Just i always thought pc3200 could work in a system compatible with pc2700, i was just assuming it would clock lower.
Thanks for clearing that up for me :)

Your board should operate fine with your DDR400 clocked at DDR333 speed. ALL RAM can be clocked downward.

Well it says in the manual that it doesnt support DDR400 memory with a 333FSB, i know what your saying and its crazy that it doesn work, once im in the bios and go to put the fsb to 166 it comes up with red writing saying that its not supported with this memory and that you should refer back to the manual which tells me DDR400 IS ONLY SUPPORTED AT FSB SPEEDS OF 200-266MHZ which im running at now and its stable. It doesnt even boot up at 166.

Well, then Asus did something screwy with their BIOS and you should buy Abit next time.

As far as I know, the mobo has a jumper to change the support betwen 200-266 or 333-400. You can change this jumper and then try to set the FSB support in the BIOS.

You are right AndyB my wife's computer was using that motherboard and she could only run PC 2700 Max in that board when we got her a new A7N8X Deluxe MoB we had to go to Corsair PC 3200 ram for her. The old ram worked fine but she wanted the increase in performance however we don't see an increase in performance visually with your eyes not even in a game.

System was just as stable with the PC2700 as it is with the new matched set of Corsair memory.

System wide performance is overall much better but hardly anything to hold a party about. This is often the case with upgrades they fail to Sparkle as expected.

However I have built a new 64 FX using the latest MoB from ASUS that supports DUAL channel and I have to say that doing anything on that P.C is like Brain Candy the mind cant get around it :)

Larger jumps in hardware are very obvious. I cant wait until another software designer provides a 64 Bit OS for the new CPU line. I would expect the Japanese or Chinese are working on a Window type OS that could in fact replace Microsoft unless it would cause a world war......
