I just got a 74 GB SATA raptor (was gonna go 36, but they were out, I was anxious, and I got a discount), and a 120 GB WD SATA drive as well. Damn are these things fast. The raptor just bleeds speed. I couldn't imagine things loading this fast before. Sandra scores it above a 2x 80 GB ATA 100 7200 rpm RAID 0 array. It's a bit noisy, but definitely manageable.

The 120 GB drive is no slouch either. My old 80 GB special edition WD drive served up files on my LAN and the max speed I could get was 7400 KB/s transferring, with an average of just under 6000 KB/s. Now I'm serving some files up from this drive and I'm pegged at 9600 KB/s constant. The drive is whisper quiet to boot.

I HIGHLY recommend Western Digital's serial ata drives. Now if only I could get gentoo linux to work on them properly :)

WTF? This is a direct copy and paste of a post I made in early late-mid December...

It's nice to know, I'm thinking of getting myself a SATA drive as well, the 36gig raptor in fact.

I've already bought a hard drive for the computer I'm building, but I'm starting to think about picking up a SATA Raptor drive like this. Sounds sweet, I bought a Western Digital 80 Gig 7200 RPM drive because it was very cheap at the time.....though kinda stupid because I'm not done building the computer and now it's cheaper than what I paid, and I wish I had at least gotten a SATA drive :(

Before I wasn't too interested in the raptor drives for the small capacity, but now that they have the 74 gig drives out....I'm becoming much more interested!

I wonder how two 36gig raptors would go in a raid config...speed wise, raid 0 striped

Very fast since I run 2 in RAID 0. The newer raptors are quite a bit faster than the old ones so I can imagine the speeds and data transfer speeds hes getting.
