When I had a 17" CRT I was running 1024 X 768 at 75Hz.
I run my 17" LCD at 1280 X 1024 at 70Hz.

The refresh rate on LCDs doesn't matter...

And 75hz tires my eyes much quicker than 85. Not when gaming, but reading text for hours at a time..big difference.

The refresh rate on my LCD is set by the video card driver.

Having a quick round of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 yesterday when the game crapped out and Windows reported a VPU problem. Thought my card had suffered major failure but the refresh rate had simply dropped to 60hz from it's previous setting of 85. OMFG, I'd forgotten just how shite 60hz was.

Are higher rez's hard on a monitor...they say that high ones shorten the life of a monitor.

God I hope not. I always drive mine at the highest settings possible. I'm on my second monitor in 5 years, my first, a crappy 17 inch Philips started losing colour in the l/h corner and randomly dropping to standby.

Hope this one doesn't go the same... Although if it does, I might just go for a TFT..... hmmm....

We've got LG at work, very nice. Bit pricey, but nice. Samsung do a good range too. Problem is, so many of the cheaper ones tend to be brands that you've never heard of. Now for a cheap 17 inch CRT, you can live with that. But a for a TFT that's maybe $400 +, you want a brand you can trust. I'm edging toward LG, as we've probably got in excess of 1500 LG TFT's of varying age and model, and the failire rate is probably about 3 - 4%.

The way I understand it form an old article here is, you can over clock a monitor & under clock it...

You have to look at the recommended res. from the monitor manufacture. My Viewsonic has a recommended res. of 1280 x 1024 @ 75 hz. So if it's ran at that res., it will have a long life.. Now if I ran it at 1600 x 1200 @ 60 hz. it's OCed & will shorten it's life, somewhat. I can't hit 75 hz at that res. Now if I run it at 1024 x 768 @ 100 hz, it's under clocked & should last longer..

That's the way I learned it & think about it, but I'm no expert... [shrug]

I'm still somewhat hesitant to go TFT for home use, which is mainly gaming. I'm still rather weary about latency. Are the cheapest TFT's out there now "game proof" so to speak? What is game proof anyways? les than 10ms latency or less than 15?

I currenly have a 9 year old 17" philips still going strong (always regains its color in the upperleft hand corner after a degauss, can do 1280x1024 at 85Hz) but I'd rather put my money on a bigger 21" screan than a TFT. Any recommendations/comments on that? Space is not a problem as the monitor will be located in my gaming lair, a no cleaning area.

Well, I have an LG1730S at work, little beauty. We play Battlefield some lunchtimers, and to be honest, I've never had an issue. They've run the game well, although I know what you mean about the response times. I was keen to get one lower than .15, until I got a hold of the model I mentioned above. Might bring UT2004 and Doom III to give it the ultimate test.

I've also weighed up the 17 inch TFT/very large CRT debate, and I must admit, I'm on the fence. At the moment, a TFT would be great because of space restrictions, but when we move, I'll have bags of space so I could easily accomodate a hefty CRT monitor.

Too many choices.......

Is Tiger Woods 2005 any good? The last golf game I bought was PGA Golf 2000, really enjoyed that but it looks really dated now.

I know what you mean, until I got Tiger Woods 2005 I was still playing PGA 2000. Next to Championship Manager, it was my most played game. but Tiger Woods 2005 is awesome, easy to get to grips with. Course reconstruction is excellent, and a lot more depth than PGA Golf 2000. Will keep you entertained for many an hour. Well worth a purchase.

Excellent. Hope it has the click-swing, if you know what I mean, not that system where you move the mouse to swing the club.

For all the good games out there, you can't beat a good game of golf. I just wish I had time to play a bit more, it's crazy at the moment.

Well, there are 3 different swing types, I'm running the default one where you do have to move the mouse back and then forward. Quite satisfying to hear the sound when you belt the driver though. Nice. I'll have a check later though and post back to let you know.

I know what you mean about a proper round. Last time I played was February. Simply haven't got round to playing again since. Used to play twice a week when I was a member of a club, but had to pack that in when my mate's first born came along. Had to get his priorities right (or wrong, whichever way you want to look at it). So now it's the odd round on a local municipal. :frown:

Oh you jammy git. Looks a cracking course. How'd it play?

Changed my clubs 2 years ago. My last set had a slightly broken 7 iron (after I wrapped it round my trolley) and a pitching wedge with a frequently seperating head. Picked up a set of Hippo's for just over £300. For that I got a rather luxurious bag with stand, D1, 3W, 5W, 3 through to 9 irons, PW and SW. Play really well, although I kepp hooking the D1 slightly left. Far better with the 3W.

Samsungs IMO are among the best LCDs.

But for me, I ain't switching to one yet. CRTs are by far more superior in quality, response time (hey, we never even paid attention to that when buying one anyways), and overall minimal eye strain. My 753DF from Samsung does the job just right, albeit the weak 1280*1024 60Hz max leaves a lot to be desired. So I just run the good old 1024*768 at 85Hz and it runs just fine. So for games, a CRT will still be much better. Visually I think you'll feel eye strain less fast on a CRT when playing fast paced games like FPS'.

My other qualm with LCDs is color range. I may be wrong on that, but I still find them not to hold the best range if not the best contrasts between different tones. The result is that for someone like me who works in the design field a lot, Photoshop color differentiation is very important. It's a good thing at the college, we have great quality Apple Studio 17" (or 19" ) monitors, they're awesome in their colors. But you can still notice a little bit of difference from them and a CRT. So when I want to have the best color tones, I'll compare to a CRT's output before comparing to an LCD's output, because the CRT still reproduces the most accurate colors.

Finally, what is truly great about recent CRTs (well I assume most have transitionned to this technology) is the Flat CRT technology. The antiglare from a flat surface works wonders over any claimed on a bombed CRT, the sharpness is even better, and overall the image quality is much improved. I am assuming a 9 year old monitor has been made in 1995, if logic prevails, so it must be a bombed one for sure. Have you ever tried a Flat CRT?

In the end, judge for yourself, read some of THG's great LCD articles. I liked their recent one where they measured a CRT's response time. It's good for a laugh when you used to think sub 15ms is the next big thing!
