I cannot open my external hard drive. its already full. no more space. how can i

Hello guys,
my external hard drive is already full (how foolish of me) i did not notice it. I can see it in my computer but i cannot open it. I try to format it using my WIN 7 OS but still it will not open.
Is there any chance to recover my file. It none please help me how to format it.
