I have been given my friend's laptop to try and fix because he cannot
access his BTInternet POP3 email in outlook express (socket error 10061).
I have also noticed that he has not run a windows update since he bought
the computer a year ago (Win XP Home SP1).
I tried to do windows update and got the following error: 0x80072EFD
(went through troubleshoot for this but did not solve problem).
I installed Adaware and AVG but when I tried to do updates for these it
said no Internet connection.
I logged onto the laptop manufacturers website and had problems access
certain pages. On my own laptop, I managed to create a username from his
serial number and purchase details, but when I tried to log on using his
laptop, I got a 'page not found error'. I seem to be able to browse most
webpages fine on his laptop, but perhaps it is only secure webpages I
cannot? For example, I cannot get onto https://www.rbsdigital.com/.
I have tried resetting all security settings under Tools, Internet
Options, Security.
To do all these tests, I have my laptop connected (wireless) to a Netgear
WGR614 and his laptop is connected to the router via an ethernet cable. I
am using NTL cable. His laptop is a Toshiba A40.

Can you get there manually by typing http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com manually in the address bar? Have you tried setting the internet security
setting to default?

Yes, I have set it to default.
I can access the webpage. It is only when I choose express/custom install
(I have tried both), that I get the error 0x80072EFD.
