Hearing of Compaq is hearing of problems, they are one and the same word...

But as far as Maxtor drives, I have bought three 200GB drives, all at the same time, and had two fail within 2 months of purchase. I'm convinced it must be something about my system that's causing it, because my other Maxtor drives have all functioned perfectly and the failures are clustered around a certain point in time, but who knows they may have just thrown quality to the wind with the new large drives and gambled on peoples' willingness to go through the return/exchange program if one fails.

SCSI drives are much more durable, and last much longer. Some of the smaller sizes of SCSI drive don't cost much more than their equivalent PATA or SATA drives. Don't plan on having 200GB of SCSI storage though, cost goes up exponentially with size - the largest SCSI drive I've seen is 160GB, and it costs $800 or so.

Well, I too have personal experience of one Maxtordrive not lasting all that long.. like three years I would guess.. But hey, obsolete IS the VISA-call ;)

Three years is about the life expectancy of any drive except SCSI (which lasts longer.) That's kind of like saying someone died young, at the age of 87. Two to three months, however, is abnormal.

aye that..!

You recon it could for instance be a "cheap'o-crap'o-psu-issue"?

It really pissed me off too.. I finally assembled a "DOS" (win98) machine with zillions of the old games on it, an awe64 and even a 3dfx-card and a liveable amount of ram... but noo.. eight hours into "Syndicate" it died... just like that :( 20gb and a five hour setup out the window..
