Hearing of Compaq is hearing of problems, they are one and the same word...
But as far as Maxtor drives, I have bought three 200GB drives, all at the same time, and had two fail within 2 months of purchase. I'm convinced it must be something about my system that's causing it, because my other Maxtor drives have all functioned perfectly and the failures are clustered around a certain point in time, but who knows they may have just thrown quality to the wind with the new large drives and gambled on peoples' willingness to go through the return/exchange program if one fails.
SCSI drives are much more durable, and last much longer. Some of the smaller sizes of SCSI drive don't cost much more than their equivalent PATA or SATA drives. Don't plan on having 200GB of SCSI storage though, cost goes up exponentially with size - the largest SCSI drive I've seen is 160GB, and it costs $800 or so.
