If you are a student with a .edu e-mail, you should qualify for an academic license. $30 or so.

If you have a need for two or three licenses, there is a family pack which sells for $120 or so:

I would not bother with Vista.

Amazons oems go for ~91$

alternatively, if your college has Dreamspark(previously known as msdnaa), you can get windows 7 professional for a small cost or free depending on the school


(you usually are entitled to be in at least one computer science or computer science related class to use such function)
