Why do my local electronics retailers advertise/sell cable modems when the local cable ISP’s WONT allow their use and insist on providing/selling their own cable modem to the end user? What am I missing here?

are you sure there's only one ISP around this shop ??
I don;t really see why you ISP would prevent you from using your own Modem though...
