Philips DSR-708/Windows Media Remote Help

Don't know if this is a hardware or software problem but I can't get my Sony computers remote to change my Tivos channels. I went through all the steps in setting it up but I can't get the remote to work. I plugged in the IR cable to both the satellites IR port and connected my IR cable to my computer. Is there something I am missing? Is the IR port on the back of the satellite reciever the right port for the cable? I lost my manual on my satellite so I can't look it up there. Some feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
