Is it possible to get a gaming monitor around $300?

I'll be playing WoW at 1600x1200, oblivion hopefully at that res, cs:s, and some other games, but the problem I have is I know LCDs at that native res are not only expensive, but look bad (correct?) at a resolution other than its native. I know I can't play 1600x1200 for forever, so is there a point in getting a 1600x1200 LCD? Can a 1280x1024 stretch to 1600x1200 and look good? Please respond if you know the answers, thanks a ton.

p.s. if the price is over 300 please post anyway, although probably anything over 400 is a no no, but if possible, keep closest to 300. thanks!
