usb infrared dongle problem

Hi

Firstly if i am in the wrong place please err 'tell me where to go'.

I have just bought a usb infrared dongle to connect a mobile phone to the
pc. I have installed it and it shows as working correctly in device manager
but it doesn't work, i have sent one back thinking it was faulty but i think
the problem is elsewhere, perhaps me!

The infrared does not show in the taskbar as working, i have used wireless
link in control panel to enable the device and the box to show infrared
activity in the taskbar is checked.

I have tried the phone on several laptops and they all detect the phone and
identify the model number, am i missing something with this.
