Modern variant

Can anyone tell me the best way to get to try the Modern variant? Is it
considered a good variant? Is there somewhere I can observe a game or see an
example in an archive?
Thanks, Richard

Not sure about resources, but I've GMed several games of Modern, and got
very positive feedback from the players about the quality of the varient.
The balance of the game is a bit odd, since certain countries (like Poland
or Ukraine) start in substantially weaker position, but have more potential
to do really well if they survive the opening than some of the traditionally
strong powers (like Germany). At least that's been my limited experience.

A Modern game in the Showcase-- that would be just the ticket.

The Dip Pouch makes reference to Modern games being played on USCA and USVA
judges but it looks as if these judges don't exist any more.

Modern has been a part of the KL Judge code for years now -- it is
available on all the judges. It was played quite a lot when I first joined
the hobby ('97 and '98 wow, I've become an oldbie without even knowing it
:), but that seems to have dropped off despite support for wings being
added to the judge code. I wonder why that is.

I think part of the reason is the incestuousness of many of the games,
the pool of people playing the variant dropped below critical mass.
But that is a symptom, I'm not sure what the original problem was.
Sure, Modern games take MUCH longer, but that actually puts the
Judge world at an advantage. The postal game that I started almost
seven years ago is finally ending..... yes, seven YEARS....

In absence of another thought, I'd suggest that's it... Modern
is a longer game.

"Looking into that" consisted of telling me last weekend in Boston
that people were bad-mouthing me on r.g.d. Apparently the only one
doing so was Jim-Bob,
who neglected that detail.

The entire "recount" file is now available at an FTP site. Over 3300
emails
worth. Now who needs to address of this thing?

I don't believe you! I did a search and the only things in the last
month were this thread and another one asking about a Judge outage,
and saying something like "ask Rick Desper, he's famous and knows
everybody".

Hardly "bad mouthing"! 'Fess up! It's a fantasy that you made up
just to weasel your French army into Belgium! :^P
