For many, 1 GB Flash-based media players provide the right combination of capacity and price. Driss Abdi looks at five options for those who don't need to carry all their music all the time.

Excellent Review. One that that wasn't touched upon, was the SOFTWARE issue. Here again, the creative wins. The iPod and iRiver ( don't know about the samsung or sony) require some stupid hokie software that you have to use, to transfer stuff to and from. Buy.com is the place to buy creative's players for cheap.

Creative rules on so many counts:

1. Non proprietary software (plug in drag and drop ANYTHING in 3 seconds)
2. Easy to find, cheap to buy non-proprietary AAA Batteries
3. Voice Recorder
4. Record mp3s (up to 320 in mp3 format, review said only in waves, incorect)
5. Can use external mics for interview recording.
6. Use as thumbdrive (with non-proprietary (mini USB) cable)
7. Radio
8. It's NOT an ipod ;)
It's not as sexy, but, it's also NOT an ipod.

All of those reasons are why i own one. (alot of it has to do with it not being an ipod) That said i have had only one problem with it. I was using the thing and droped on a wood floor and unfortunatly the battery cover holding tab broke off. However this issue is easiliy solved by buying a thing for it that lets you put it on you belt an then leaving on there ( i am doing it because my battery cover is fubar).

sony has discontinued the bean walkman, although they still sell it in the US. Still waiting for the A-series to come to the US

Don't forget that you can use Creative's MediaSource software as a virtual Hi-MD recorder (soundcard permitting). Record audio from any source? Yes please! DVD's with great soundtracks were never the same after I found that gem.

the Zen Nano Plus Earphones sounds great...even better than ipod's..
maybe your ear isn't similar to the designer's ear...that is very important in earphones...touch the earphone while it is on your ear a nd you'll notice the difference

Oh please.... 1GB player with big brands on it... What about those S1 MP3 players?

Those are smaller, hell lot cheaper, eat AAA batteries like Creative's Zen, half of its size is reserved for a frigging full-size USB type A port, (while the other half is stuffed with the mentioned battery). and they are flash drives, while we are at it.

No need for cables or special software (provided there is a XP or 2k around), and for the frost in the cake, some DON'T NEED batteries once they are sucking the juice straight from a USB bus. Mine won't, but some rechargeable AAA batteries will take care of it.

You gotta ditch the original earphones, though. My original 20 year-old gold-plated 20Hz - 20kHz SONY fontopia's earbuds were more than a fine replacement.

You are not seeking absolut quality here, you are just trying get rid of the ranting of your cubicle's neighbour over the phone, or you still need to listen to environmental noise (screeching car brakes and so forth). If you wanted real quality, you wouldn't be listening to MP3s after all, you would be home listening to your original CDs in your chunky valvulated AMPLIFIER, restored from your dad's attic. These players get you by an otherwise totally sad and boring Monday in a flash, pun intended.

Apart from that, they can record that totally boring class that you are planning to skip, (you don't want to be caught off guard either).

As final note, FM might save you, should you forget to change your jukebox every other day.

Since all my needs are satisfied by those "made in China" gizmos, I don't see why should I spend more with a branded MP3 player. Sure I won't have warranty, but when was the last time you actually took benefit from a warranty??? Plus, these generic MP3 players were totally disassembled, every chip in it identified, every possible firmware checked, so you won't get shaf**d by maddened DRM schemes or whatever.
