I have never buy a scanner or use one before. My budget is around US 100 dollars, and i will mainly use it to backup reference or text books onto my HDD. So can anyone please recommend any good models and what specific features should i look out for?

I like Epson. HP are OK. I always buy SCSI scanners because they high end models are cheap, due to the decreasing popularity of SCSI. Sounds like you just need a scanner with good OCR for converting text images to documents.
