I'm looking for a good number of players to participate in the
first-ever Payola Void games. Let me start by introducing the
different aspect of the variant.

Payola is a system applicable to any Diplomacy variant map, designed
to allow players to give orders to any unit on the board, not just
their own. Instead of giving direct orders, players place money (bids)
on a variety of orders. Units will execute the order for which they
can get the highest amount of AgP (the monetary unit in Payola), which
may or may not be a combination of bids from different players.
Successful bids are deduced from the player's treasury. Overbidding is
allowed, the system takes care that the treasury never goes below
zero. Players receive money every winter according to the number of
SCs they have in a decreasing value scheme: The first SC renders 17
AgP (or the victory criterion minus one), the second 16 AgP etc.
Payola is the brainchild of Manus Hand, creator of the Diplomatic
Pouch and the DPjudge, and John Woolley. Visit the Payola place at

Void is a variation on the Chaos theme. Whereas Chaos starts in a
Winter turn with every SC province owned by a different power, Void
starts in a Fall turn with every non-SC province that borders at least
two SC provinces occupied by a unit from a different power. Powers on
land start with an army, on water with a fleet. Like Chaos, players
can build in any SC they own. Like Chaos, the Void principle can be
applied to any variant map. Unlike Chaos, a number of SCs will still
be neutral after the first Winter, because of bounces or because no
one moved there, which means that the Spring situation, which could be
thought of as the real start of the game, is different in almost every
game. Note: Casualties of the first season can be and usually are
high. All the more reason to start in more than one game.

Void was implemented on the DPjudge for the Calhammer map in June this
year. A number of games have started since then, none has yet
finished, but the general consensus seems to be that this is quite a
fun variant, for players and observers alike. Each game starts with 36
players and usually one third (in a press-game) up to one half (in
no-press) is eliminated after the first season. Void was created by
me. You can find a detailed description on
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge?page=about:void

So what if the Payola system were to be applied to the Void map? I'd
like to know, and several other people are likewise eager to play and
find out. One thing is for sure: For someone unknown with Payola,
there's hardly an easier way to learn the system, as each will start
with just one unit, no centers and just a small amount of AgP. An
excellent set-up we think to expand the Payola player base a bit
further. Two games are forming: moneyvoid
(http://www.floc.net/dpjudge?game=moneyvoid), which has normal press
settings, and hushmoneyvoid
(http://www.floc.net/dpjudge?game=hushmoneyvoid), which is no-press.
Registering for both games is possible. To apply, you first register
with the DPPD at http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd, then after
receiving a confirmation, send an e-mail to dpjudge@floc.net (dpjudge
at floc dot net) with in the body:

JOIN moneyvoid yourpassword
SIGNOFF

(or hushmoneyvoid). Any questions, ask the GM. If you haven't signed
up yet, you can click the GM link on the game page of these games,
otherwise you can log in to the game and send press through the web
interface, or through e-mail, similar to the way it works in
KL-judges.

Mario.
