Both shouldn't be on at the same time. I have used zone alarm for years
without any problems. Disconnect from the web and then uninstall zone alarm.
Reboot your machine and then make sure that the windows firewall is also
disabled. Then reinstall zone alarm. It isn't wise installing zone alarm
while windows firewall is still enabled. You must disable windows firewall
first.

How could both of them not work together? My Defender-Pro 5-in-1 program
works great, and I can use BOTH firewalls, without any problems.

Thanks for the info.
It's also not a good idea to turn WFW off while contected to LAN or when ZA
is on as I've found out.

That's odd.
At the time, a month ago, my XP had ZA Pro latest version running fine.
When it came time to install SP2 with the CD that MS was nice enough to send
to me, I disabled ZA Pro. Of course the PC was not connected to the
internet or were there any active LAN connections.
Disabled or closed any active applications running in the system tray.
Installed SP2 and rebooted. WFW installed and ran at boot. So did ZA Pro.
Disabling WFW was no problem and no apparent consequences.

The same here. On my wife's computer and on my own, we've been running
both Trend Micro's firewall/av suite AND Windows XP firewall without a
hitch.

Running two firewall 'does not' give you double the protection so what is
the point? Zone Alarm is far superior to Windows Firewall. Zone Alarm
recommend that you disable Windows Firewall prior to installing ZA. If you
have two firewalls enabled they are both trying to open the same ports and
execute the same applications and this is where problems can occur.

I understand what you're saying, John. But so far we've never
experienced any problems whatsoever. And when we go to any of the sites
that check security, we're completely invisible which was not the case
when we ran only one firewall.

I agree. I see no reason why you can not run more than one firewall.

And which was the "One" firewall that did not make you "Invisible"?
I'm running two firewalls but one is software while the other is
hardware (actually firmware). My software firewall is ZAP 5.5.094
which, unlike WFW protects in both directions and my firmware firewall
is the one built into my Cisco Wireless Router. However, when I tested
my ZAP setup, I bypassed the router firewall for the test and the ZAP
firewall showed us stealth on all tested scenarios.
WFW is better than nothing I guess. I look at it as something there
to give a warm fuzzy false feeling of security to the computing
neophytes. Example, a couple of issues of Smart Computing back, an
article was discussing firewalls and showed that, on average, 35% of
all private information loss is through outgoing transfers initiated
by something on the system compared to 65% being initiated from
remote. WFW does not protect from outgoing, only incoming.
The article continues by covering resources required to run software
firewalls. Those numbers I forget but suffice it to say that if you
have a firewall using resources to query and make pass/no-pass
decisions on traffic, then why double the usage of resources to have
two firewalls doing the same identical thing? Two is not better than
one unless one of the two is a piece of junk. Also, the article did
suggest that problems "Can" occur if running more than one software
firewall at the same time. The article suggested that one find a
single software firewall suited to your needs and application and use
it solo. However, no problems were reported when using a software and
hardware firewall at the same time since one doesn't really see the
other and only one (the software one) is requiring system resources to
do its thing.

Agreed. As I said, I saw no APPARENT problems. But, as you stated, things
can go wrong. I forgot to say I disabled the Windows Firewall afterwards.

That's cool. Hey, I'm not trolling and I'm not trying to be a
know-it-all jerk. It just seems to work for us and we've had no problems
so my attitude is... if it ain't broke, why bother fixing it? As for
problems possibly occurring, I agree with you. This may very well
happen. But then again, problems will inevitably happen anyway... even
in the best set-ups. I suppose I'll address these when and if they
happen, but I'm not going to try and make predictions.
