I'm getting ready to order a new system, its going to be a beast. This is my first time building. I don't want to fiddle around with overclocking, so ideally this will snap together. Here is the component list:
P4C800-E Deluxe
Western Digital Raptor 74GB System Disk
Western Digital 200GB SATA
Intel Pentium 4/3.2C
Dual Dell 2001FP Monitors
Antec Plus 1080AMG Case/PS
Plextor DVD+R/RW
Radeon 9600 (Low end on purpose! Waiting for more info on NVIDIA/ATI Next Gen's)
One thing I am still undecided on is the RAM for the system. I've read about CAS on tomshardware, but could still use some coaching.
I'm trying to choose two of either the:
Corsair XMS DDR PC-4000 1GB(512MBx2)(#TWINX1024-4000PT )
and
Mushkin DDR PC-3200 "222 Special" 1GB(512MBx2) (#991156)
Again, I really don't want to screw around with overclocking the machine. I'll drop in a prescott in a year or so, and will be putting in a next gen video card once the dust settles between NVIDIA and ATI.
All comments appreciated, if you want to point out another model of mem as a suggestion--go ahead.
Ok heres a few articles and advices that might help you some.
Sweet system your putting together slap a 6800ultra in and you in business hehe.
First about that case you might consider thise one
<A HREF="http://www.antec-inc.com/us/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=90510" target="_new">http://www.antec-inc.com/us/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=90510</A>It has a window, but it doesnt come with a PSU. The reason I say thisk is because if you put a last gen card like the 6800ultra, Nvidia recommend a 480 whatt PSU. Now you might be better off with a True Power 550whatt to have some headroom. I think the case you selected has a 480 or even a 430 not sure...Might end up being a couple of bux more expensive tough.
Now for your ram since you dont overclock juste get some PC3200 or PC3500 might be goof because it offers a little bit of headroom if you feel like ocing later on.ALso its more stable when running at 3200 speed.
Timmings are not that important in a system like yours, heres an article that explain it some.
<A HREF="http://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040119/index.html" target="_new">http://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040119/index.html</A>I really like OCZ top notch ram their new EB platinum series is really sweet.
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=2019" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=2019</A>If you wanna go for supper low timmings that mushkin special is the way to go! Heres more info on it...
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=2015" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.html?i=2015</A>So in the end it really depends if your going for those super low timming or just some good quality ram with good performance also youd get Pc3500 if you dont go for that mushkin. You never know you might feel like overclocking it to 3.4ghz one day hehe.
One more thing if you have some extra money get two raptor 36.7 and put them in raid0, kickass performance...
Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-3-3-8, Leadtek FX5900@450/875, 2X30gig Raid0<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by labbbby on 04/19/04 05:35 PM.</EM></FONT></P>
Well, I wouldn't pay that much for a board. I mean, you can read my article at Sysopt about the same board and see that...as nice a board as it is, it's just not worth the price. I'd like to have an IS7 myself, and have set a couple customers up with them, as well as quite a few forum members. Hardwareboss was the first, you might want to ask him.
I'd go with the 9600 Pro. I realize you're just trying to buy time with a card that can get you by, but the 9600 Pro is around 50% better for around 10% more money...and you might want to use that card on a different system later, so it's probably worth the extra money.

So let me get this right, you wanna get 2Gigs of RAM for your system in 4x512DIMMS. Do you wanna use it in dual channel mode? Because its unlikly it will work? I doubt he will able to overclock much with that configuration.
Isnt it recommened you use ECC when using that ammount of RAM?
