The new <A HREF="http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/productlist_action/US/EN,CRID=19?SelectFeature=6177" target="_new">Logitech MX510 Performance Optical Mouse</A> should be a good addition to a gaming system when it is released, considering the listed specifications.

Narrow it down, and tell me exactly what kind of information you are trying to find. Accuracy levels? Price? Cordless vs corded? The best manufacturer? The best software package/driver?

It would be much easier to compare specific mice, if a review is available online, where the reviewer has acquired two different mice and subjected them to tests.

As a general rule, the majority of users consider optical mice superior in nearly every respect, especially since optical mice have become much more accurate over the past couple of years, compared to early offerings. The first examples of optical mice had tracking problems, which have since been resolved with both Microsoft and Logitech devices. Wireless devices had a very limited battery lifespan. Most of that has been resolved, too, as a mouse like the Logitech MX700 uses rechargable batteries and a base station that doubles as a recharger. Some wireless devices had difficulties with maintaining connections due to EMI and oft used radio frequencies, and Bluetooth has helped a great deal in that area.

The ball mouse that is still advocated by a few gamers is one from <A HREF="http://www.razerzone.com/" target="_new">Boomslang</A>, but while it is very accurate, most of the reviews about the mouse I have read over the years continuously make disparaging comments about the unusual button layout and bad ergonomics. Apparently, you either love it, or you hate it with a passion. Not to mention the company's prior mis-management, which has made support spotty, or even completely non-existent at different times in the past.

Nearly all mice these days have a wheel of some kind, whether it's a ball mouse or optical. Microsoft has done a little more work in that area than other companies, but it's up to the users preference about whether they like the differences.

I would suggest putting in some brand names ... search around with Google, and do some reading about the different models. Or put in "<A HREF="http://www.google.com/search?as_q=gaming+mice&num=100&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=lang_en&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images" target="_new">gaming mice</A>", and you'll pick up over 700,000 possible links, which should certainly get you started in the right direction!

I personally have two Logitech dual-optical mice, and I've used them with zero problems, especially when coupled with an Everglide optical mouse pad, which can make a real difference with the accuracy of the mouse, due to the reflective particles embedded in the pad. I know that to be a solid fact, via my own personal testing.

Once you've found a mouse you'd like to check out, go someplace like Best Buy, where there are many laid out on display, and look at them carefully. The button layout, how the mouse feels in your grip, the tilt and "mushiness" of the wheel ... these are factors that shouldn't be ignored. Not everyone likes a Logitech mouse, and not everyone likes the "feel" of a Microsoft mouse. It should be something that you're comfortable using, because it's going to be in your hand for a long time afterwards.
