I need advice on what monitor to get.

I've just put together a great machine for gaming, and I don't want to mess up by getting a bad monitor.

I want it to be around 23/24" flat.

It's mainly for gaming but it will also be my main TV/movie screen.

I've been looking at the Acer 24" LCD AL2423W Widescreen Monitor, 1000:1, Silver/Black, 6ms

I don't know that much about monitors but I'm told lower ms is good.. and they are cheap... but thats not always good. I don't want to get a sub-par monitor trying to save money considering how much I'm spending on the rig.

I'm based in Ireland and I'm finding it hard to source many 24" monitors. The acer is one of the only ones I've found with a low refresh rate.

I'm not sure what Gray to Gray means also some monitors show response time as 24 ms with 6ms gray to gray and say they are great for gaming..

Any and all advice welcome.

i own a dell 2405FPW. great monitor. note for games these things need alot of power to use their native res.

about latencies, read the THG reviews on LCD's. they will explain all you need to know. never believe the advertised latencies. although look for the black to white to black one for your bestbet as to how it will actually perform.

my monitor aint exactly HD ready but if you could find a new one going cheap i would advise getting it as it is good.

the newer HD ready I.E it had a HDMI connector is the 2407FPW. if it is anything like my one it should be good.

like i say look at the toms reviews to get a genral idea of what you should look for and preferably see the screen before buying although i didn't get the chance with my one.

The only thing I do not like about the 2407 verses my 2405 is the 2407 has a lower resolution... :(

it does i thought it was the same. have they changed it to 16:9 format. i'm too lazy to check.

I believe it is 1920x1050 res verses the 2405's 1920x1200

nah it would have been 1080 if it was 16:9. they have kept it 16:10 and it has the same res. just checked dell's website. all it has is a dvi-d with HDCP and a different panel. i have heard the 2405 is better quality as they are having a few problems.

:oops: My bad... It indeed does run native 1920x1200 res...
I am glad I had clarified earlier that it was only my belief that it was lower... :wink:
