I just bought a 61" JVC HD-ILA and I did'nt do the typical homework I do for a purchase of this $$. I got tired of looking and the picture on this one in the store looked best in the price range.

Here's the problem: The new set looks great when playing DVD's but is grainy, and fuzzy when showing regular cable broadcasts. I've got the set hooked up just like my old one with the cable going straight into the DVD player and than a cable from the player to the TV. What do I have to do to get a decent picture?

BTW I'm not talking about a super duper HD picture here, I'm just expecting at least as good as the picture on my 15 yr old el cheapo 27" tube TV. WHat do I need to do here?

GI - you'll need a decent scaler. The resolution of standard TV is 640x480 interlaced. Your TV has a fixed on-screen resolution of 1280x720 or 1920x1080 (depends on which model you bought).

The original picture, using its original number of pixels would be very small on-screen, but the TV stretches it out to fill the screen. It's the same effect as if you have a very small picture on your computer screen and stretch it out. It looks soft, fuzzy, jaggy, etc.

A scaler will clean the picture up and "stretch" it out intelligently, making it look much better. The DVDO iScan HD+ (MM602) is an excellent scaler that is on closeout. You should be able to get one for about half of list price now. Call SoCalElectronics and ask for Chris. He should be able to get one for you at a great price.
