Hi

My father bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I copied his documents (mostly word and excel) onto his new system, I had a phone call from his this evening saying he is unable to edit some word documents because of them being "secured and from an unrecognisable source".

There must be a (policy) setting in Office 2010, Windows 7 or Avast I need to change to allow all of his documents to be editable I gather, if so where is it?

Office 2010 has it so he may need to click to allow editing due to macros or something. Newer feature if he is coming from an older version. Sould appear as a yellowish bar with an edit button at the top just below the ribon.

If they aren't too complex of documents, the simplest fix here might just be to save them in office 2003 format. Should get rid of most of the new fancy stuff. Importing to google docs would do the same thing.
