yeah let me know how its looking, in my research ive heard that the dell 2001FP is a good choice, or some samsung models...but nothing solid yet
Just recieved mine today L90D+, have to say I am very pleased with the choice. I couldn't see anyone being dissapointed, especially if your a gamer looking for a solid monitor.
there is a site called "ViewScore" that can help you.
it holds lots of information about LCD displays and other tech parts.
check in for some more information
www.viewscore.com
I have a L90D+. Bought it in Feb just after they were avail at newegg and never looked back. Don't know what they are selling for now but I paid $379 w/free S&H.
It sometimes pays to dig into these forums a bit there is a wealth of information. If you want to know tons about the Hyundai read
<A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/ce/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=20289#20289" target="_new">http://forumz.tomshardware.com/ce/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=20289#20289</A> That should give you al the data you need and more.
You forgot to mention that it pivots. It dosen't come with the SW but if you have a Geforce 4 (and maybe others too I just don't know) its built in.
Great monitor - it uses a Samsung panel
I am now looking at the Samsung 930B, it seems to be like the 915N except it has DVI support as well. Any thoughts?
I saw the L90D+ on the tigerdirect website for 349,,, but then you have shipping of course,
so, I don't know if that means anything
AMD Athlon64 3500+
Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe
1 GIG Corsair Dual DDR
2 x 74 GB Raptor HDs
NVidia6800 Ultra PCI-e
Dual Layer DVD +/-RW
PC Power & Cooling 510W PSU
Whats the responce time on a CRT I have an old Cornerstone 21" monitor and im thinking about making the switch to LCD and a hardcore gamer so I want max FPS and performance. I hate flickers my eyes are very sensitive to flickering. Anyway just wondering how much of a performance difference there will be.
One of the main advantages of LCD's, they do not have the issues with "flicker", refresh rates, etc - so easier on the eyes in many cases. Instead, you look for the response time - how fast the screen can refresh a fast moving image, to avoid optical trails and "ghosting." The new screens have a response time under 12ms, so should not be a problem in games. I picked up the Samsung 930b yesterday - still waiting to hook it up though.
[-peep-] me guys (i dont mean actually do that) the screen is huge its awsome guys just got back from atrip in london and it was waiting to be unpacked.
the screen is quality, no flicker no ghosting still getting high frame rate with a 6800 at high res, i would recommend it so much more detail.
crisp clear image, i am happy.

Just got the Hyundai LD 90+ from Tiger Direct. It's an awesome gamer lcd - I've tried it on Call of Duty so far and it's super. It had a dead pixel though. I contacted the Hyundai service, and they were worthless in swapping. Suggestions: get it from someone like Tiger Direct - they swapped the LCD, no questions.
I have tried/tested almost all of these monitors took them all back to the store................ The one I have had for two days and have yet to see a proffesional review on is my Sony SDM-HS95P All I can say is wow it blows me away everytime I turn it on Text, Graphics, Games ( fast fps type) it seems to do it all. Take at look at one I think you will be impessed I was going to buy the new Samsung 8ms 19" and looked at the new LG's again 8 ms 19" I know this is not a good comparison but in the store the picture on the Sony blew the other two away The Sony was 12ms and more expensive but after taking it home and living with for two days I have no regrets text, contrast, blacks, viewability, graphics, movies, fps and racing games all perfect. I love it

the new sony is a excelent choice it blows my L90D+ out the water stick with the sony. well impressed with the quality but to expensive for me £450 in the uk.
<font color=purple> MY FINGER IS ON THE BUTTON! </font color=purple>
Well "blows out of the water" is a bit strong. I've seen it and it isn't close to $300.00+ better by any stretch. Colors are nice, contrast is either better or worse (seen it listed as 1000:1 or 500:1 - haven't looked as sony site) in specs but no height adjust or pivot and that default angle sux. Sony is 12ms and Hyundai is 8ms both respectable gamers as LCDs go.
I'll stick with my Hyundai and won't shed a single tear, but if you like it and want to spend the extra beans then buy it by all means
Allot of monitor choice is subjective based on personal viewing preference and needs. But I have tried many LCD's and actually went to purchase a different monitor when I saw/purchased this one and even though looking at the
"specs" the Samsung and LG's were supposed to be as good or better in MHO there was no comparison when actually viewing them side by side. And yes the Sony is expensive and Sony is a pain in the --- to deal with if you have any problems but agaian it just looked so much better than anything else I had looked at that I thought it was worth it for me. I don't need pivot functions and where it sits on my desk works out well for height again that is why they make so many different types of monitors. I know that this LCD was just released and have not seen any profesional reviews on it and that is why I posted the information about it. So those in the market might give it a look and decide based on their own needs and preferences. If you like your Hyundai that is all that really matters.
Sony image is more viberant than the hyundai/samsung but sony for general use is a lot better like for offive use e,t,c.
i have seen all 3 makes hyundai fitted in my money available braket there small niggles with the L90D+ like the menu buttons, and it doesent look the best but screen size and 8ms response was enough for me to buy it for gaming, but i would have brought the sony if it wasent so expensive.
<font color=purple> MY FINGER IS ON THE BUTTON! </font color=purple>
I agree that it's subjective. For me, my viewing environment, gaming needs, and budget my choice was clear. BTW: what store was showing the sony samsung lg and hyundai side by side? I went to Best Lie, Circuit City, and COmpUSA and that combo was never available. I bought the Hyundai via specs, saw the samsung and lg side by side and the sony on its own.
The sony is a more vibrant panel no doubt due to the 500nit brightness v the 350 nit for Imagequest. I don't think Sony manufactures there own panels although they may. As you may know the L90D+ uses a Samsung panel under the hood. I have an old Sam 171v that the L90D+ replaced. The 171 has softer colors but it wasn't height adjustable. Having that ability, just one great feature among many, I could never get a monitor that just sat almost flush on my desk. If I got the Sony I would have a use for all those old phone books I just threw out. It wouldn't look very good
yes i did notice that the angle would be a problem for me if i had the sony, as the sony angles up rather than down this would cause a massive problem for me as my desk has a second shelf for a moniter which is higher and the screen will just look plane stupid on my desk.
Also hight ajustable was great for me but sony did not have that, one thing i dont get about my L90D+ is why does it need to rotate as when you ove it it takes a long time of adjustment with a spirit lvl to get it perfect again lol.
But picture quality is a plus for sony over the samsung/hyundai screen, O well you cant have everything i suppose.
Also to all L90D+ owners have you noticed it takes 5mins for the colour to become just right, its like the LCD screen needs to warm up?

Sorry I don't know what you mean in the 1st sentance.
Sorry, I may not be as picky because the picture quality is great adn the sonys "added vibrance" (which is a subjective quality and questionably better) isn't worth that much more money for me.
I have never experienced that warm up issue you speak of. COlors are alway what I expect as soon as the LCD is turned on.

Sorry I must have misunderstood you. Since the L90D+ was the first LCD mentioned in this thread (by rX8) I assumed you had actually seen the Hyundai. At least it appeared that you had.
I live in Sanford and its been a while since I visited Best Lie in Longwood although they just built a new one off Rienhart up my way. I might use that place for taking a look but buying there is another matter altogether, as you may already know.
Have not seen the Hyundai.......I apologize I have seen quite a few displays but not that one.
The Displays I have purchased/and taken back in the last year were made by...ben q, lg, nec/mitsubishi, samsung, phillips, viewsonic and I have seen dells, gateways and a eizo nanao at friends houses and looked at multiple others in stores as I'm sure we all have.
But Best Buy in Alafaya/Orlando FL has the Samsung - SyncMaster 19" Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor - Black 930B
1280 x 1024 resolution; DVI input; 8 ms response time; 300 cd/m² brightness; 700:1 contrast ratio
LG - Flatron 19" Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor L1980Q
1280 x 1024 resolution; DVI-D and VGA inputs; 8 ms response time; 250 cd/m² brightness; 500:1 contrast ratio
Sony - 19" Flat-Panel LCD Monitor - Silver SDM-HS95P/S
1280 x 1024 resolution; digital and analog inputs; 12 ms response time; 400 cd/m² brightness; 550:1 contrast ratio
Samsung $469.00 - $90.00 in Rebates Total Cost $ 379.00
Very attractive price point
LG $599.00 - $50.00 in Rebates Total Cost $549.00
Getting Expensive
Sony $699.00 - $100 in Rebates Total cost $599.00
Expensive.
I recieved another $70.00 + $10.00 instantly when I purchased mine so that helped a little more on the sticker shock .
Again just trying to provide some usefull information to help out. If you get a chance to look at this Sony display especially beside other comparibaly speced displays and you do not need height or pivot functions I believe you will not argue that the Sony has superior graphical capabilities. Now based on it's known height or pivot function disparities and the higher price the decicsion is yours. But do try to get as much information as you can and most importantly in my opinion is look at as many as you can especially side by side. Any way hope that helps someone out there. good luck like I said it took me over a year to finally break down and get rid of the CRT............. But WOW what a difference I am quite pleased with the change.
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by linewizardiam on 04/23/05 10:11 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
You are correct. I have seen the Sony at their store in Millenia Mall so like you I haven't seen the Hyundai and Sony side by side. The quality of anything that is primarily visual is inherently subjective and so opinion is what buyers are left with. The hyundai has been reviewed by many 3rd party orgs (like toms, Behardware, Anandtech and others) and gotten top marks all around. Some of those tests included measurable characteristics that allow useful comparison. I'm sure that someone somewhere will test the new Sony and then a better comparison and Cost benefit can be assessed. It will still boil down to personal preference that's why the PTCruiser is still on the road
Get the sony LCD. Own it and love it... especially for games.
Did you get the Hyundai from Tiger Direct USA or Canada?
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by maddogatc on 04/28/05 10:24 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
To anyone who has an L90D+, is the bottom of the monitor brighter than the top? This is an issue with my monitor and i want to see if i can exchange it with tigerdirect.ca
I own the L90D+ and there is no brightness difference at all it is consistant over the panel.
I just bought the Sony myself, it's a great display and a huge advance on my old CTX TFT. Though i'm wishing it had a better stand as it's a little low for me.
By the way there is a review here:
<A HREF="http://www.bluefi.co.uk/r1p1_sonysdm-hs95p.html" target="_new">Sony TFT review</A>
There's also a user review on Amazon.com.
Good luck with the Sony. I'm sure its great. What did you get it for and where?
Got to say that your link isn't much of a review but they are hard to find for this monitor. Also they report some bad specs. The link gives a contrast ratio of 1000:1 while the <A HREF="http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?CategoryName=cpu_Displays_FlatPanelLCDs_18" target="_new">sony site</A> lists 550:1. Strange but forgivable.
oh and check the sony site anyway it mentions a $100.00 rebate. Maybe you can save more, who knows.
Well, I just returned from Best Buy and looked at the Sony model. I'm also interested in the Hyundai. The problem I noticed with the Sony and every other LCD in the store was when you're viewing a color gradient. Maybe this is dependent on the graphics card (I don't really know). To describe what I'm talking about, imagine looking at a sunset where the colors go from nearly white through shades of yellow, orange, red, and ultimately twilight purple.
What I saw on every LCD monitor was a distinct border between each transition of color. There would be concentric bands (like a rainbow) with a clearly defined point where first you see white, then a light shade of yellow, then a darker shade of yellow, and so on. They don't actually blend into each other. This would drive me nuts.
I currently have a 19" Diamondtron CRT with a Geforce Ti4600 graphics card at 1024x768. I'm really concerned about how things like anti-aliasing would appear on LCD monitors. I'm not a graphics wiz and want to make sure that things like steam coming out of a pipe in Doom3 or smoke from a sinking ship in Silent Hunter 3 look the way they are supposed to.
It seems to me that LCD monitors are still basically a bunch of little squares that are independent of each other, hence the bordering effect I described above. Can anyone tell me if a decent graphics card resolves this or is this an inherent trait in LCD's that isn't going away?
Thanks
scrapser
It is not a inherent trait of LCD technology. CRTs have pixels too. Optimum resoloution adn a good graphics adapter should get you your smooth transition.
Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that CRT's have pixels too but the difference (I think) between CRT's and LCD's is the way the pixels are displayed. On CRT's they are projected on the screen by the electron gun but on an LCD, they are essentially a grid. This leads me to wonder how the "blending" I'm concerned about would be achieved on an LCD. I'm assuming the graphics card has the ability to make a CRT's pixels blur into each other but maybe I'm wrong here. If some process produces a similar result with a graphics card/LCD monitor, I'd like to hear about it. Unfortunately I can't go to a store and see LCD monitors using different graphics cards. That would answer this question pretty quick. What cards are those who have LCD's using by the way. I'm planning on getting a 6800 Ultra along with a new monitor.

I went to Tiger Direct(Markam location) on Sat to pick up a Hyubdai L90D+. Called in advance to make sure they had them in the store...yes they did. Got there about 1.5 hrs later and they had none. Sold out for a couple of days. Not to f@#%^*g happy after driving 45min to get there. They did however have about 20-25 defective ones they were selling...all with 1 or more dead pixels. Not a good feeling that they had that many L90D+'s that had been returned as the store was not that big. Said to hell with Tiger Direct for miss leading me and said I would never shop there again. Decided not to go with the Hyundai as I couldn't find any warranty facility in Canada. Closest I found was in California. So I went with the Samsung 930b. Cost more but am really happy with it so far. No dead pixels. Much better than my old 17" flat screen CRT. Colours are great!
<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by maddogatc on 05/03/05 10:26 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
Not really. Not to make a big deal about it but on CRTs phosphoresent coatings are "excited" by electrons shot by the guns you speak of. The phosphers are also laid out in a grid hence pixel. SO even though they are very different technologies to a large degree "blending" is an optical illusion for both.
I have owned 4 lCDs the last two being the Samsung 171v and most recently the L90D+. I now use GeFOrce 6800 Ultra 256 AGP card. I have never had any banding on any of the LCDs when using the native (recommended) resolution.
Thanks for that explanation. I had at least some suspicion that blending was achieved partly by how the human eye fills in the gaps once the resolution gets small enough. But what I'm most grateful for is hearing you are using the same card I'm looking at getting and are not experiencing any "banding" (good word to describe it). This puts my mind at ease. Now I guess I'll wait to see how the new Viewsonic 4ms LCD monitor being released this month looks like. I hope a review comes soon.

I own a Sony 19" LCD SDM-94P, I've had it for almost 6 months. I'm an avid gamer with a ATI x800. I play graphic-intensive games like Doom3, HL2/counterstrike source, everquest 2, farcry. I have ZERO complaints with my monitor. It's the brightest LCD on the market and with a great response time (12ms) which is essential for games like FPS. I don't see this "blending" effect that you mention.
Didn't Tom's review of 26" LCD TVs say that these wide screen panels have better response rates/latency than the best LCD PC monitors? Check out the sections of the individual reviews on latency, and see how fast each LCD TV panel was compared to a damn fast 17" LCD monitor.
For instance, this what was said about the 26" Sharp Aquos:
"The Sharp panel has a latency specification of 14 ms, and in practice, it's a real racehorse! The worst latency we measured was 23ms. That's literally better performance than our reference PC monitor, the BenQ FP71E+, except for the brightest colors, where our monitor recovered the lead."
All but one of the other 26" LCD TVs under review performed similarly with respect to latency. So, the implications for gaming performance are pretty clear. In other words, if you want to play games on a flat panel, the better choice is a wide screen LCD TV.
I have a 30" LCD TV, and have played Half Life2, Doom3, Far Cry, and Call of Duty with it. HL2 and Far Cry support wide screen resolutions.
The panel is powered by an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I never seen any ghosting.
If you do a bit of shopping, you could pick up a 27" for about $800, and some pretty good 30" units for about $1,000. I paid $800 for 30" LCD TV on Black Friday last year, the hot deal of the year.
Well since LCD monitor panels are now showing 8ms and maybe soon 4ms RT I don't think the TV panels are any better. The experience on the widescreen would be nice and something like a 27" would still fit on a desk so that is cool. Price is still my issue. I guess I'm not willing to pay that much when I can still get a pretty good experience at 19" for less than $400.00 (and the prices keep going down.
The biggest question about the L90D+ is does it have any motion blur in game?
I'm a CRT guy trying to justify gaming on an LCD so I don't have to lug my huge CRT around to lans
Can any die hard gamers out there with this panel comment on how it is with games. Primarily the ghosting, motion blur, etc. Is there still a noticeable difference between a standard CRT and this panel when playing fps games?
Ah... the title of this post is 19" monitors... how did we start talking about LCD TVs!?!
its just the nature of the beast
