I just purchased my first LCD and am very pleased. The only problem is that I can't read the text of web pages and Windows when at the recommended 1280 x 1024 resolution, I guess I'm getting old.

To solve the problem, I have reduced the resolution to 1152 x 864 from my graphics card and everything seems a more legible size.

Is there a better way to achieve the same results but operate at the recommended 1280 x 1024 resolution ? I've tried increasing the font sizes in my browser, but all that does is cause wrap around of text within the confines of the web page frame, which gets rather confusing to read.

My solution seems to work but maybe there's a better way ? :?

For IE, you can go to View>Text Size>Largest and that will make all the fonts larger on web pages, unless it's already set to that, but its set to medium by default.
As for desktop, try right clicking your desktop, Properties>Settings (tab)>Advanced. There should be a DPI setting somewhere in there, select the Large Size or make your custom one, up to 200% size.

Thanks guys. I tried these options but found unpredictable things like line wrapping occur on certain web pages when you increase the font size of the browser.

I found the best all round solution is just to set a "non-preferred" resolution. I guess it makes the monitor work harder by forcing it to extrapolate pixels, which is not good for clarity, but the image quality is still pretty decent.

I guess I didn't do enough thinking about the repurcusions of running a 19" monitor. I find I have to sit a reasonable distance back so I'm not seeing the individual pixels, but then the text is awfully small to view at a distance with 1280 x 1024

I think Windows Vista will solve your problems.

Apparently, it has proper scaleable fonts so you can run your LCD in native resolution and the fonts will appear a nice readable size with web pages scaling properly.
