Depends on your mouse. I used to use a regular cloth mousepad with my regular Microsoft optical mouse, but I upgraded to a Razer mouse and the laser is too fine for the pad and when I move the mouse a very small amount, my cursor jiggles around a little. It's fine for regular use but absolutely game-breaking when sniping or playing a game like Warcraft 3. I didn't want to spend lots of money on a Razer mousepad so I did some experimenting on various surfaces and found that a laminated calender was an excellent surface. It's really smooth so moving the mouse is very easy and I can make the most minute of movements with no problems.
So you may not need a pad but if you still want one, the Razer pads are pretty damn sweet looking. And they have very high resolution weave so you can bet the latest 1600-2000 dpi mice won't have any problem on the surface. But if you don't want to spend money, a laminated calender taped to your desk works wonders. And you can write on it with dry-erase markers to take notes!
