I'm buying a new optical drive & would like a suggestion or 2, I've narrowed my selections to these 4:

Samsung 48x24x48 CDRW
AOpen 48x 24x 48x +16 DVD/CDR Combo
LG 48x24x48 +16 CDR/W - DVD Combo
Samsung 48x24x48x16 CDRW & DVD Combo

Does anyone know which would perform best & which is quietest? What spec. should I look for when finding out how loud/quiet the drive is?

I recommend LiteOn combo over these drives.

Among them, the last one (Samsung combo) is very good drive and a pretty good LiteOn alternative. (and LiteOn usually costs little less than other drives)

When reading a drive's specs, how do I determine how loud/quiet its revving up/down/spinning is? I know this is measured in dB, but is a low negative number quieter than the hi positive number?

from personal experience, LiteOn noise is moderate, but definately tolerable. It's neither turbo jet, nor completely silent. In fact, no 48x or faster optical drive is real quiet

Thanks for the help, I'm leaning towards the LiteOn or Samsung; depends on the prices I find.
