my current harddrive for my entire game system is a 75 gig IBM 75GXP. i'm not sure if its on its last leg but if i play a movig around 200 megs in size it takes forver to load and play and so on.

i own a 10k rpm 4gig seagate cheetah. my 75gxp has two partitions, one for the OS(4 gigs) and one for storage.

im looking to spend 200-250...are the new WD740 Raptor and Seagate 7200.7 drives that much faster then my current one? i cant find any reviews on my to compare stats. would i notice a big difference between my current HDD and the 7200.7 or do i need to step up to the WD740? also i think the 7200.7 in raid 0 is as fast as a single wd740. should i just get two?

overall i guess is my current scsi10k equal or slower then the 740 WD.
.adam.

from what I could read you are trying to play incomplete .avi files with DivX, and that takes a lot to load into memory ever with the faster drive, so if you are planning only play movigs it will not make a big difference, GXP is faster than 7x.2, SCSI is better that IDE in any case even if it is a bit slower than IDE in "loading" movig. 10k will give you a sec or two advantage in movig loading than 7.2k, but is is worth paying 3 bux a gig for what you do?.. not in my book. These days I preffferr to pay $0.5 a gig and live with a few seconds "lag". So maybe someone else will help you more with your decision.

Your ancient 4G cheetah isn't going to match any of the modern drives around in terms of continuous read/write, even your 75GXP should be a match for that. I would recommend a WD740GD for good seek times and fast transfer rate. Two 7200.7s in a RAID0 will probably match the transfer rate of a WD740GD but not on seek time.
